How We Got Started
It all started one day with a dream-breathing conversation with the owner of a local country store called Heavens to Betsy in small-town Devon, Alberta. She enthusiastically encouraged us to see the potential in building a business using a Journeyman Carpenter willing to make things people are dreaming of from Pinterest but don’t know how to build or can’t find in stores.
In the beginning, we only built simple barn wood photo-frames and word boards but it wasn’t long and people were asking Mike to build some bigger wooden projects like farmhouse tables, beds, benches, consoles, and sliding barn doors. We have sure learned a lot since then and we now do all custom work for our customers.
Until now we have mainly grown through word of mouth and social media presence, but we thought it was time to tell our story on a website and just give some simple illustrations of a few of our favourite projects so far. We want to give credit to an amazing female carpenter named Ana White for her excellent woodworking plans which she shares for free with woodworkers like us and gives businesses like ours the opportunity to build well-engineered timeless yet trendy pieces.
Besides custom wood furniture, we can also create a variety of special feature walls to enhance the look of your space. Mike also has a background in commercial and residential construction so he can come and help with your carpentry and home or office construction projects. Whatever you need, we’re happy to serve.
We are grateful for the people who took a chance on us, believed in our business even when we couldn’t fully grasp what a gift it was to our family.

Do you build with hardwood?
No, we primarily use Canadian SPF: Spruce, Pine, Fir as well as Birch & Aspen. We build with thicker pieces of wood than many larger box companies you may have purchased from before, so the structures are more solid in how they hold up. We are not set up to mill or work with harder wood products in our shop.
Is there a showroom we can visit?
No, unfortunately, we are not a large enough company to have a showroom at this time. Also, we build all custom pieces so a showroom would only be a jumping-off point to view, so we could customize your own unique design. You can achieve the same end through photos. Bring us your ideas from Google or Pinterest or wherever you find them and we can design visually from there. To see samples of our work, feel free to peruse our photo gallery.
Is your work structurally sound?
Yes, for two reasons
1: Mike has 16 plus years of Journeyman Carpentry Experience.
2: We use good quality engineered base plans. We follow a number of excellent carpenters who share their plans, one being Ana White, a female carpenter from Alaska. She creates well-engineered blueprints and we use them as jumping-off points in many of our designs.
How long does it take to get my piece made?
We often have a waitlist because we are a small business at this point, so it might be a short line up and it might be a bit longer. We believe good things are worth waiting for. Just ask when our next available spot is on the list when you enquire. You can put down a $100.00 deposit to hold your spot on the waitlist. We will honour your time and once it is your turn we will keep you up to date on the progress of your piece through photos and messages straight from the shop.
Do you stand behind your products?
Yes, we do. We do our best to educate and inform in advance about the difference between a computer/machine-created product and a hand-crafted one. We also will come and fix any issues within reason if any should arise. We also like people to know the difference between manufactured wood fibre products versus actual wood with divets from where branches once existed and wood grain still intact and visible. Sometimes, wood might even spring a leak of sap. We will do our best to help you handle that if it should occur. Wood being heated and cooled can do all sorts of natural things.
Do you deliver and install?
Yes, we deliver and install to areas within a reasonable distance from Devon/ Edmonton. If you live more than an hour and a half from our location, you may need to either pay us a little more to come your way or come and pick up your piece yourself and install it. We will work with you to explain the installation in that case. We want to serve you in the best way we can, but there may be limitations on delivery.
